The singer-songwriter, whose dad is Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl, will release her debut album next month
Violet Grohl is ready to prove she’s got what it takes to make it as a musician — regardless of who her famous father is.
The 19-year-old singer-songwriter — and daughter of Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl — shrugged off the “nepo baby” label in a new interview with The Forty-Five, saying she doesn’t really care what people call her, as she’s aware of her privileged background.
“Obviously, doors are open for me because of my last name. It’s not something I’m ever going to hide behind or say, ‘No, I worked so hard for this! You guys shouldn’t say that! That hurts my feelings,’” she said. “I don’t care — I really don’t.”
Grohl said it’s something she’s heard since she was 13, when she performed “Heart-Shaped Box” during a one-off Nirvana reunion with her dad in Los Angeles. The budding star, who has performed with her dad several other times, is set to release her debut album, Be Sweet to Me, on May 29.
“I’ve heard that since I was 13 years old. So call me a nepo baby all you want. It’s ‘whatever’ to me,” she said. “I just hope that eventually people will give me a shot.”
Grohl went on to tell the outlet that she’s “beyond grateful” for the life that she was born into, as it’s allowed her to grow up surrounded by talented musicians.
“It’s such a privilege to be able to be around musicians and in a space that nurtures my interest and allows me to grow and to make a record,” she said.
The singer also encouraged people to come and see a live show of hers before judging her decision to pursue a career in music.
“Come see me live. Come listen to my music and then you can decide for yourself if I’m worthy of this career or not. This is my passion, this is my thing - and it’s all I want to do,” she said.
Grohl is the daughter of Dave, 57, and his wife Jordyn Blum, who also share daughters Harper, 16, and Ophelia, 11.
She’s released three songs off her upcoming album, including “THUM,” “595” and “Applefish.”
Dave Grohl praised the record to Radio X in February, saying the songs cover a “wide range” of sounds and draw inspiration from artists like The Sundays and Cocteau Twins.
“She is so incredibly talented and has such great taste in music, like you’ll be pleased when you hear what’s on the record,” he said. “It’s beautiful. It’s an amazing record.”
The rocker added that he was entirely hands-off when it came to helping his daughter launch her career, and didn’t even know she’d signed a record deal until she came to his house for dinner and told him.
“I’m totally uninvolved, and I’m like the dad that wants to be there and know everything, and she’s just totally doing her own thing,” he said.
The Grammy winner also said that her making her record so quickly inspired him to make the Foo Fighters’ upcoming album Your Favorite Toy, which is out April 24.
