HBO's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has made significant progress, unveiling its cast, releasing a trailer, and even confirming a premiere window of Christmas 2026. While the Golden Trio was announced last year, with Dominic McLaughlin cast as The Boy Who Lived, Harry Potter, alongside Alastair Stout as his best friend Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
However, there’s a catch. Since the first season of the Harry Potter reboot will adapt J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the Mirror of Erised scene requires an older version of Ron Weasley. The makers have taken care of this nuance, and that role has reportedly been filled by actor Louis Shelton.
Per Redanian intelligence, Shelton, who has stage credits to his name, will portray a very scene-specific version of Ron Weasley, which is set around Christmastime at Hogwarts, when Harry sneaks Ron out of their dormitory at night to show him the Mirror of Erised.
During their first holiday break, Ron and his brothers stayed back at Hogwarts, as the Wesley boys’ parents traveled to Romania to visit their second son, Charlie. Wrapped in the Invisibility Cloak, Harry traces the route from the library to the hidden chamber. As he pushes the door open, Harry rushes towards the tall golden-framed mirror and sees a reflection of his parents. Ron, however, sees something else: himself, alone, older, and as Head Boy.
I’m wearing the badge like Bill used to — and I’m holding the House Cup and the Quidditch Cup — I’m Quidditch captain, too!
The following night, Dumbledore catches Harry gazing into the mirror once again and explains its true nature. Named as the Mirror of Erised, the object shows nothing more than the deepest desire of a person’s heart. Thus, Harry, who had never known his family, saw them while Ron, who was always overshadowed by his high-achieving brothers, envisions himself as Head Boy.
Ron Weasley occupies a major role in the Harry Potter universe, as one-third of the iconic trio. He comes from an English pure-blood Wizarding family, each of whom has made immense sacrifices in the Wizarding World. He exudes quite a charming and humorous presence in the story, while proving to be deeply loyal. Ron goes above and beyond for his friends, keeping Harry in check, serving as his guiding light, and stepping up when his extended mean family fails to do so.
Notably, William Arthur “Bill” is Ron’s older brother, the first child of Arthur and Molly Weasley. He served as both the Prefect and the Head Boy at Hogwarts before going on to work as a Curse-Breaker for Gringotts Wizarding Bank in Egypt. As the Second Wizarding War was brewing, he returned to England and took a desk job to work for the reconstituted Order of the Phoenix. Bill married Fleur Delacour and ultimately fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
With the new Harry Potter reboot moving full steam ahead, and Ron Weasley reportedly having two actors portray him, it signals that the HBO adaptation has paid attention to detail, capturing even the smallest details of the character.
Additional lead casting announcements include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Luke Thallon will play the key role of Quirinus Quirrell, while Paul Whitehouse plays Argus Filch, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as his father, Lucius Malfoy, and Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley, respectively. Katherine Parkinson will take on the role of Molly Weasley, Amos Kitson portrays Dudley Dursley, Rory Wilmot plays Neville Longbottom, and Tristan and Gabriel Harland play Fred and George Weasley, respectively.
HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone arrives on Christmas 2026.
