JASON STATHAM'S 13-YEAR-OLD ACTION THRILLER HAS A SECRET CONNECTION TO RAMBO (& IT'S A HIT ON NETFLIX)

Netflix subscribers cannot get enough of Jason Statham's Homefront. The 2013 action thriller, which has a secret connection to the action-packed Rambo franchise, is now in its second week on the streamer's Top 10 chart.

According to FlixPatrol, Homefront is ranked No. 6 on Netflix's Top 10 Movies chart in the United States. The movie has been a constant presence on the charts for the past two weeks. It had previously climbed to No. 3 on the chart before falling to its current position.

In Homefront, Statham stars as Phil Broker, a retired Drug Enforcement Administration agent who leads a peaceful life with his daughter Maddy in Rayville, Louisiana. However, trouble begins to brew as the father and daughter get entangled with local crime boss, Gator, played by James Franco, due to a school bullying incident.

Homefront's Secret Rambo Connection Explained

Homefront was directed by Gary Fleder. The screenplay was written by action legend Sylvester Stallone, with whom Statham has teamed in the past on several action movies, most notably the Expendables franchise. The movie was adapted from the novel of the same name by Chuck Logan.

Early in the movie's development, Stallone considered adapting Homefront into the next Rambo movie. When that idea was discarded, the actor still intended to star in the movie himself before eventually offering the lead role to Statham. Stallone remained involved as a producer.

The idea of taking an unrelated novel and adapting it to fit an already existing franchise is a trick that Hollywood has been using for decades. Walter Wager's 1987 thriller novel 58 Minutes, for instance, was adapted as the sequel to Die Hard, 1990's Die Hard 2, with the main character, Frank Malone, replaced by Bruce Willis' John McClane.

Six years after Homefront, Stallone returned to the role of John Rambo in 2019's Rambo: Last Blood. Whether intentional or purely coincidental, Last Blood's story proved similar to Homefront, following a retired Rambo enjoying a peaceful life on his ranch in Bowie, Arizona, before he is forced to use his old skills to save his adopted niece from the Mexican cartel.

Despite being highly anticipated by fans, Rambo: Last Blood was poorly received by critics, although Stallone's performance was praised. However, the movie was a modest box office success, grossing $91 million worldwide.

It's interesting to ponder how different the Rambo franchise might look if Stallone had followed through with adapting Homefront as a John Rambo story. Last Blood, as the title suggests, ended up being the actor's final bout with the character and franchise. Stallone is not involved with the reboot prequel John Rambo that was announced last year.

Noah Centineo will instead play the title character, with the movie set to reveal the origin story of Rambo in the Vietnam War. Lionsgate acquired distribution rights for the movie, as well as the rights to Stallone's Expendables franchise, from Millennium Media in November 2025. Principal photography on John Rambo began at the end of January 2026 in Bangkok, with Jalmari Helander directing.

Homefront is available to stream on Netflix.
