Superman & Lois star Tyler Hoechlin's breakout acting role will soon be available to watch on Prime Video. Road to Perdition, the 2002 film adapted from the DC Comics of the same name, is a crime drama with an all-star cast.
Tom Hanks stars as Michael Sullivan in Road to Perdition, with Hoechlin playing the role of his son, Michael Sullivan Jr. The film is set in 1931 during the Great Depression, as a mob enforcer and his son get vengeance against another mobster who murdered the rest of their family. Hanks' character works for the Irish mob boss John Rooney (played by Paul Newman in his final live-action theatrical film role). Rooney raised Sullivan Sr. as his own child after he was orphaned, causing Rooney's own biological son Connor (Daniel Craig) to be jealous of the bond the two share.
Ridley Scott's Gladiator II just arrived in theaters, but more exciting news for Gladiator fans will be arriving this December.
Road to Perdition explores themes of father/son relationships and loyalty while also showing the consequences of violence and how it affects families. Other stars in the film's cast include Jude Law as Harlen Maguire, Stanley Tucci as Frank Nitti and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Annie Sullivan.
Road to Perdition had an $80 million budget when it was made in 2002, and the film went on to be a box office success, grossing over $181 million. Critics praised the cast's performances and the film's tone, direction and especially the cinematography. Road to Perdition was nominated for six Academy Awards, with cinematographer Conrad L. Hall posthumously winning the award for Best Cinematography. Hall also secured awards for the film's cinematography at the British Academy Film Awards and from the American Society of Cinematographers. The film holds an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
With Road to Perdition being a box office success, the film launched Tyler Hoechlin's career, and he was nominated for multiple awards for his performance. Hoechlin won the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor and the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film (Leading Young Actor). Road to Perdition's success led to him landing the role of Martin Brewer in the 7th Heaven television series, where he became a regular character in the cast. Hoechlin went on to play the werewolf Derek Hale in the Teen Wolf television series, appearing as a regular for the first four seasons and returning for the final sixth season in 2017.
One iconic thriller from David Fincher gets a new streaming home.
In 2016, Hoechlin returned to his roots adapting a comic book character when he landed the role of Superman on the CW's Supergirl show. Hoechlin appeared as Clark Kent in six episodes of the series and also appeared briefly in crossover episodes on other CW shows adapting DC Comics, including The Flash, Arrow, Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow. His portrayal of Superman proved incredibly popular with fans, and CW ultimately ordered a spin-off series, Superman & Lois. The fourth and final season of the CW show premiered on Oct. 7, 2024.
