'THE GENTLEMEN' SEASON 2 HAS NOW STARTED FILMING FOR NETFLIX

Fans have been left waiting for any updates about the second season of Guy Ritchie’s hit Netflix series, The Gentlemen. And while we now have a promising update, it could mean fans will be left waiting even longer before returning to this caper about an aristocrat and his drug empire.

As per a report by Screen Global Production, The Gentlemen Season 2 has only just started filming, with the Netflix production returning to the United Kingdom for the follow-up. Much like its predecessor, the second season will consist of eight episodes but, while the series was officially renewed back in August last year, it has taken a while before getting it in front of cameras. Meaning audiences are likely looking at a 2026 release date.

Landing on Netflix in March 2024, The Gentlemen is a spin-off of Guy Ritchie’s 2019 crime comedy of the same name starring Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant. The movie was met with praise from both critics and audiences alike, with the serial spin-off achieving an equally positive response. You can check out the official synopsis for the series below.

“When aristocratic Eddie inherits the family estate, he discovers that it's home to an enormous weed empire — and its proprietors aren't going anywhere.”

'The Gentlemen' Proved To Be a Major High for Netflix

Led by Theo James as Edward "Eddie" Horniman, a former Army captain and the 14th Duke of Halstead, The Gentlemen stars Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, Vinnie Jones, Edward Fox, Giancarlo Esposito, and Ray Winstone, among others. The series proved to be a major hit for Netflix, garnering close to 1.21 billion minutes of viewing globally over its first four days, alongside achieving solid ratings of 75% from critics and 84% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. “Slick as a well-pressed suit and given watchable wattage by its cast, Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen doesn't seamlessly expand upon the original movie but has enough verve to be fun on its own terms,” the critics’ consensus reads.

Despite this success, it took Netflix a surprisingly long time to officially renew The Gentlemen for a second season. Debuting in March, it took the streamer five months to confirm that the show would return, which is no doubt part of the reason why it has only now started filming and isn’t expected to premiere until next year. The gap between seasons of TV shows is slowly becoming a bigger and bigger problem, and while there are usually reasons for this (such as the availability of the cast), many miss the days when you were guaranteed a new season every year.

Plot details for The Gentlemen Season 2 are being kept under wraps at present, but returning star Theo James has revealed to THR that things will be “bigger and darker than season one. I really wanted to — and so did [creator] Guy [Ritchie] — make sure that we evolve the show, and that is the intention. As fun as the first season was, if you do the exact same thing again, it may not be as fun, essentially.”
