“WYNONNA EARP: VENGEANCE ”STAR, CREATOR PREVIEW 'SCARIEST VILLAIN TO DATE' IN NEW SPECIAL

Find out when Wynonna returns to Purgatory with the exclusive premiere date.

Wynonna Earp wasn’t going to enjoy her happily ever after for long. It’s just not her style.

When Wynonna Earp ended its four-season run in 2021, the titular heroine had left her hometown of Purgatory behind to hit the road with the man she loved, Doc (Tim Rozon). It was a proper ending to the beloved SyFy series — one that saw Nicole (Katherine Barrell) and Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) tie the knot — but one that came together rather quickly. “We had been ordered for a season 4 and a season 5, but things were kind of up in the air,” series creator Emily Andras tells Entertainment Weekly. “I thought: It’s better to write an ending that is satisfying and if we’re blessed with another season, I can blow it all up. My gamble paid off, for better or for worse.”

But suffice it to say: There’s always been more story to tell about the Earp heir destined to use her beloved gun, Peacemaker, to send revenants back to Hell. So when Tubi expressed their interest in continuing the story, Andras jumped at the opportunity. “They wanted something pretty fresh and unique, so this is a brand new story,” she says.

For star Melanie Scrofano, the return was more a matter of when than if. “I don't think I fully believed that it would be over,” Scrofano says. But it wasn’t until she was back on set that she really let the reality sink in. “I kept hearing rumors but I just refused to believe them. I was really scared that it wouldn’t happen. But the second I put on the jacket and Peacemaker and was around the people — it’s really the crew and the cast that bring her out of me. We just slipped back into it.”

That’s not to say that the homecoming will be nearly as heartwarming for Wynonna. When Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, the 90-minute special airing on Tubi on Sept. 13, picks up roughly 18 months after the events of the season 4 finale, Wynonna is called back home to help fight a new evil. “The past is never that far behind us, and some of it might be showing up looking for vengeance, so to speak, in the special,” Andras says. “This is unlike anything else they've ever done before.”

“For Wynonna, it’s the scariest villain to date,” Scrofano warns. “This taps into where Wynonna is at this phase in her life and it's probably the most scared she's ever been.”

Andras confirms the villain is “formidable,” adding, “Our normal weapons or skills we have at play aren't going to work against something like this, so it's definitely going to be a challenge. Also, everyone's a little bit out of practice.” Although we don’t know much about the villain’s background or what makes them such a fierce foe, we do know, as Andras puts it, that “they have hair for days.” So that’s sure to get under Wynonna’s skin.

Outside of villain talk, fans can expect their usual dose of WayHaught. “They’re living their best wifey lifey, so to speak,” Andras says, before adding, “Look, they have to deal with real life and what have you, but they’re as good as they ever were. They've matured into a married couple and there's definitely joys, but also challenges, that come with that, and we're going to explore that with them.”

In other words, fans can expect a bit of romance, a bit of action, and, if we know Wynonna, more than a few razor-sharp comebacks. “The heart, the laugh-out-loud wit and action-packed sequences that were always a part of the series are still in the special. This cast has not missed a step,” Andras says. “It'll make you cry, it'll make you laugh. It might make you throw up a little bit. It is Earping at the Earpiest it’s ever been.”

Wynonna Earp: Vengeance premieres on Friday, Sept. 13, on Tubi.
