Despite its intentions, the movie flopped financially, earning only about $645,000 against a $16 million budget. “Rust” was overshadowed by the tragic on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after a live round was discharged from Alec Baldwin’s prop gun. Lawsuits, safety questions, and widespread outrage defined the production. Not only did it ruin the reputation of its lead actor, but when the film was finally released in 2025, it earned just $25,000 in its opening weekend.
